How To

What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins allow us to absorb nutrients from food. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver, fatty tissue and kidneys. You can find vitamin D, E K, A, beta carotene, and other fat-soluble vitamins.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C – essential for proper nerve function.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - Red blood cells are made from red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For example, the RDA for vitamin A is 400 micrograms per dayfor adults 19 years or older. Pregnant mothers need 600 micrograms per days because it is vital for the development and growth of their baby. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. For infants younger than one year, 700 micrograms are required daily. However, this number drops to 500 micrograms each day for children aged 9-12 months.

Children aged 1-18 years need 800 micrograms daily, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms per days. Children who are severely obese or underweight will need 1200 micrograms each day.

2200 mg of vitamin A per day is required for children aged 4-8 who have been diagnosed by anemia.

2000 micrograms is the minimum daily intake for adults over 50 years old to maintain good health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who have been pregnant or are lactating require more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms each day when breastmilk production occurs.
